How many of you have gone to an event, met someone new, and the flood gates open where they make the conversation all about themselves?
If you are one of these people making the conversation and try to draw as much attention as possible to you…STOP. Take a breath and focus on the person you are speaking with. The conversation will flow naturally and will eventually work its way back to you. First engage with the person you’ve met and steer the conversation towards your new prospect. Try to learn something about them as a person and eventually their business.
Remember you are there to network and that involves cultivating new business relationships. Above all, most importantly stay engaged with your new prospect, and do not scan the room for another person to speak with while currently having a conversation. This isn’t speed networking; you are there to foster existing relationships and build new relationships.
You already know what you can bring to the table. Now is the time to find how you can benefit from, and how you can add value to your next referral partner.
